Among the valleys linking Póvoa das Leiras, in S. Pedro do Sul, to Covelo de Paivô, in Arouca, there is a route with a name that sparks curiosity: the Incas Trail. It is one of the unique paths explored by the ancestors of the village of Gourim, and it is still one of the favourite walks of those who stay at Casa Margou.
An ancient mountain path
Long before there were roads, the villages of the Serra da Arada were linked by footpaths. People, animals and goods travelled along them between valleys. The Incas Trail is heir to that network of paths, and walking it is also a way of getting to know the history of those who lived here.
What you’ll find
- Deep valleys and slopes of heather and schist
- Streams and small waterfalls, especially after the rain
- Traces of terraces, stone walls and old buildings
- Silence, lots of silence, and wide views over the Magic Mountains
Before you set off
It is a mountain trail, on uneven ground with changes in elevation. You don’t need to be an athlete, but some walking experience helps, and you should go well prepared:
- Walking shoes with good grip
- Enough water and something to eat along the way
- Layered clothing: in the mountains the weather changes quickly
- A charged phone and the route downloaded, as the signal can drop
- Set off early, especially in summer, and avoid days of heavy rain or fog
If you’re staying at Casa Margou, talk to us before you set off. We know the mountains well and will help you choose the best starting point, length and time of year for your walk.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the best seasons: mild temperatures, streams full of water and the mountains full of colour, from the lilac of heather in bloom to the copper tones of autumn. In summer, choose the early hours of the day. In winter the beauty is different, but the ground can be slippery.
After the walk
Nothing beats coming back to Gourim, lighting the fire or diving into the pool, and having dinner on the terrace watching the mountains change colour. See what Casa Margou is like and discover what else to do in the region.
