Thinking about your first yoga retreat in Portugal? The mountains breathe differently — and when you step into a retreat, there’s much more to it than classes and timetables. Here’s an honest guide to what to expect before, during and after.
Why do a retreat in Portugal
Portugal has a rare combination: varied landscapes a few hours’ drive apart, local food, well-established yoga and wellbeing communities, and regions untouched by mass tourism where you can still find real silence. The Serra da Arada, for example, is one of the least explored areas in the centre of the country — exactly the kind of place where a retreat makes sense.
Compared with destinations further afield, a retreat in Portugal has three clear advantages:
- No jet lag and a short trip — leaving more room to integrate the experience
- More affordable than Bali or Costa Rica, without compromising on quality
- Local, seasonal, Mediterranean food — essential when your body is doing more work on the inside
What you’ll find on a yoga retreat
Physical and meditative practices
Most retreats follow a similar structure: a more active morning practice (Vinyasa, Hatha or Ashtanga), a break for breakfast, free time or a workshop in the middle of the day, and a gentler practice in the late afternoon (Yin, Restorative, meditation or yoga nidra). It isn’t the number of classes that makes the difference — it’s the rhythm.
Food that is part of the practice
On well-designed retreats, food is part of the process. Vegetarian or vegan meals, fresh local ingredients, no alcohol or processed sugar. It isn’t deprivation — it’s letting the body rest from the stimuli it is used to.
Time for silence
Some retreats include periods of silence (partial or total). It can seem intimidating at first, but it’s where much of the transformation happens. If you’ve never tried it, start with a retreat with silence during the night — that’s already enough to feel the difference.
How to prepare
- Cut down on caffeine and alcohol in the days before. You’ll feel much better from the very first day.
- Pack light, but comfortable. Layers, two practice outfits, walking shoes.
- Leave your laptop at home. Phone for emergencies and photos, but on flight mode whenever possible.
- Be ready to feel more. The body holds a lot that comes to the surface when we stop. It’s part of it.
Retreats in the Serra da Arada
At Casa Margou we hold retreats on specific dates throughout the year, together with guest teachers. Each retreat has its own theme — from reconnecting with your inner sun, to letting go and preparing for a new cycle. Groups are small (up to 14 people), the house is comfortable, and the valley is silent by nature.
